    Understanding the Yips:
    When the Body Overrides Performance

For many athletes and high performers, performance anxiety can show up in a very specific and frustrating way known as the yips. The yips are sudden, involuntary disruptions in skilled movements such as a golfer a short put, a baseball player unable to throw accurately, or a musician losing fine motor control. Even though the person knows what to do, their body doesn’t cooperate.

This is not a lack of skill or effort. It is a brain-body interference, pattern, rooted in the nervous system. The yips often develop when pressure, past mistakes or fear become encoded in the brain’s emotional and motor systems. Overtime, the brain begins to associate performance with fear, triggering a reflexive response that overrides fluid, automatic movement.

In essence, the body locks up because it is trying to protect you even when there is real no danger.

    What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a brain-body therapy that helps identify and process the root cause of emotional performance blocks. Instead of just talking about the problem, it helps you access where the stress that is stored in the brain and body.

It is based on key principles:

    • Emotions are stored in the body
    • The nervous system drives performance responses
    • Lasting change, happens when the brain and body process together

    Why Performance Anxiety Happens

    The Brain-Body Connection

Performance anxiety lives deep in the brain, especially in the amygdala, your internal alarm system.

    This part of the brain:

    • Does not use language
    • Reacts instantly to perceive threat
    • Stores, emotional and performance experiences

    That’s why you can’t think:

    “I’m ready. I practiced.”

    … but still, feel:

    • Tight chest
    • Shaky voice
    • Racing heart
    • Mental fog

How the Yips Fit Into the Brain-Body Response

The yips are an intensified version of the same brain-body dynamic. Instead of just feeling anxious, the nervous system disrupts coordination and timing. This happens because high pressure experiences, especially repeated mistakes or embarrassment that become stored in the subcortical brain. When triggered the body shifts into survival mode, interfering with fine motor control, and automatic performance.

This is why trying harder, thinking more or pushing through often makes the yips worse. The system is already overloaded.

The Problem With ‘Just Thinking Positive’

When anxiety is triggered, your brain shifts into survival mode. This reduces activity in the prefrontal cortex, which controls focus, creativity and decision-making. This is why insight alone does not resolve performance anxiety or the yips.

The Brainspotting Difference: A Bottom-Up Solution

Brainspotting works directly with the subcortical brain and nervous system, where performance anxiety lives.

    It helps your brain:

    • Access emotional experiences
    • Release stored stress responses
    • Restore a sense of safety and control

    Brainspotting for the Yips

Brainspotting is especially effective for the yips because it targets the exact brain-body patterns that disrupt performance. Instead of trying to correct the movement itself, brainspotting helps process the underlying emotional and neurological imprint that is causing the interference. As the brain releases the stored patterns, performance often returns to more natural, automatic flow without forcing or overthinking.

The Reflexive Response: Signs of Processing

During a session, therapists track subtle body signals, such as:

    • Eye movements for blinks
    • Swallowing
    • Deep sighs or breaths
    • Twitching

These are signs your brain is processing and releasing stored performance stress

    How Brainspotting Works

    A Step-By-Step Experience

Select the Issue You Want to Focus On

You begin by choosing something you want to work on.

    This could be:

    • Stage fright or public speaking anxiety
    • Sports or performance pressure
    • Specific performance breakdowns such as the yips in sports or fine motor skills
    • Stress around work or Zoom meetings
    • Sexual performance concerns
    • A past experience that still affects your confidence

You don’t need to go into detail, just enough to bring the issue gently into awareness.

    Tune Into Your Body

Next, you connect with how this issue shows up in your body.

    You might notice:

    • Tightness in your chest
    • Butterflies in your stomach
    • Tension in your jaw or shoulders
    • A sense of heaviness or contraction
    • Stiffness or jerking movements

This is important because performance anxiety is stored in the body, not just the mind. Your body is showing you where the emotional energy is held.

    Identify the Brainspot

With your therapist’s guidance, you slowly scan your visual field from left to right or right to left.

    • You are looking for the spot where:
    • The feeling becomes stronger
    • Your body reacts more
    • You feel a deeper connection to the issue

This is your brainspot, the place where your brain is holding the unresolved performance stress.

Just Stay With It: You Don’t Need to Do Anything

Once you find your brainspot, you simply:

    • Keep your eyes on the spot
    • Stay aware of your body and internal experience

    You don’t have to:

    • Talk
    • Analyze
    • Try to fix anything

Your brain and body begin to process and release the stored anxiety naturally.

    Co-Regulate and Feel Supported

Your therapist stays present and attuned to you throughout the session.

They may notice small shifts such as:

    • A deep sigh
    • Subtle movements
    • Changes in your breathing
    • Muscle relaxation

These are signs that your nervous system is processing and releasing the anxiety.
You’re not doing this alone, you are supported the entire time.

    What to Expect?

    Many people experience:

    • A sense of calm or relief
    • Feeling more grounded in their body
    • Less intensity around the performance issue

    Overtime, this process helps you:

    • Feel more confident
    • Stay present under pressure
    • Perform with greater ease and clarity
    • Smoother, more automatic movement and restored confidence in performance
